The return (?)

Timehop reminded me the other day that it has already been 5 years since the London Olympic games,
which reminded me that my last post on this blog was about the Olympic games, albeit a few years after the event;
which in turn made me wonder why I stopped writing.

I guess I got a bit too busy, trying to finish a thesis whilst looking for a new job wasn't easy.

Then I got a new job, but the thesis wasn't finished...

Then I didn't particularly like my new job, but I had to finish the thesis...

Then I finished the thesis, and submitted.

Then I got a new job, a real job I enjoyed, and

Then I was happily busy!

There are plenty of gaps to fill in, and I might get the opportunity to write about these last 3 years. But I might not. I guess we'll have to take this a post at a time and see how it goes!

One thing is for certain though.. I definitely feel more like an engineer rather than a physicist these days!

My Games Maker Experience - Finally

I have been editing this text for a couple of years now, it's not my best writing, and it misses a lot of details, but it is a short account of my experiences as a Games Maker in London 2012.

My journey as a Games Maker began in October 2010, when I completed the application for volunteering at the Olympic games. A bit unsure about having all the skills necessary, but determined to apply, to give myself a chance of being part of this huge celebration of sport. 9 months later I was invited for an interview at the EXCEL Centre London, where I was asked to say why I wanted to be part of this, and what skills and experiences I could offer. Around Christmas 2011 I was informed that I was going to be a Sport Operations team member. I remember feeling proud and excited. I didn’t know what the Sports Operations team’s objectives were, and what I was going to be doing, but I was going to be part of the games and that’s what mattered to me!

My first shift at the Olympic Village was in July 2012. It was the most surreal experience ever! Walking in a village where flags from all over the world were hanging from the balconies, athletes were training; bands were playing the Olympic Anthem, and people like me, volunteers were taking pictures in front of the Olympic circles.

My job there was ‘simple’. Our team (Sport Viewing Room Team, or SVR) was responsible for recording all 40 feeds for television broadcast on DVDs, according to the time each one started/ finished. The athletes/ coaches/ sport officials could then request a copy of their game. They had the option of taking the DVD and watching it on their own laptops, or using one of the viewing rooms we had available for booking.
Starting at 7am we were programming all 40 DVD recorders to record the day’s schedule, inserting the correctly labelled DVD in each one. At 8am our reception was opening for people requesting or collecting DVDs. At the same time our duplicators were working in full speed copying the DVDs from the previous day.

I met some amazing people during my time as a Games Maker (Hello Sarah, Kayleigh, James, Sheri and the rest of the team). My fellow games makers were all exceptional and supportive. Our manager, Mark, and the two team-leaders (Holly and Ru) were incredible, providing support and guidance when needed, showing true team spirit, allowing us to work our own routine, and letting our personalities shine through. Even random people on the street/ tube were great to us. For the first time people in London would smile to me on public transport, and even chat to me! They would usually say ‘Goodmorning! Were are you off today?’, they would ask questions about the Games, and my role as a games maker. It was amazing what the Games did to Londoners!

Three weeks after my first shift was the closing ceremony of the games. I have to admit that tears were running down my face as Jacques Rogge was saying thank you to all the volunteers. It had been a tiring three weeks, but exciting non the less, and I was so proud I was a part of the games!

I still remember my last shift. It was the day after the closing ceremony, and as it was my last day I arrived early to have time to enjoy the Olympic park atmosphere once more, taking pictures and just walking amongst the Olympians. I reached the SVR offices at 6.30am, expecting to see Mark there as always. Mark was nowhere to be found, the offices were locked, and Sarah and I just sat on the steps wondering what was going on. Typical us, we started making up theories in our head, Mark had been really apprehensive in the beginning of the games, not showing a lot of trust to the rest of us, but he was becoming better lately. We thought that he is testing us, that he was giving us one last test before we all finished, making sure that we knew how to do our jobs properly. By 7.30 neither Mark, Ru or Holly had arrived, we knew they had tickets for the closing ceremony, but that didn’t finish very late, and they were always the first ones to arrive anyway!

The athletes/coaches/sport officials would be arriving soon, to request their DVDs but we hadn’t even started copying yet, if I remember correctly. Keyleigh and James were the ones who went to the security team downstairs and asked them to unlock our offices for us, as the leadership team wasn’t there with the keys. After some negotiation they let us in through the outside door, but they did not have keys for the inside door, where the archive and empty DVDs were kept. We had to make this as we went along, so we got the copied DVDs out, and decided to give them out until one of them showed up.

Holly and Mark arrived at 9 and 9.30 am respectively, both looking pretty hangover. Of course it wasn’t a plan to check whether we could do our jobs, they were both drunk, and both trusted each other to show up and decided to have a lie in for the last shift!

Mark was so lovely that day, he allowed us to have copies of the games we wanted, and gave us all a little gift to remember our time together. I remember the excitement when someone won a medal, the concern when some had an accident, the anxiousness during the final moments of a still undecided game, the gratefulness people showed to us, the pride we felt when we were able to help, the spring in my step every morning and evening, despite the tiredness and the standing up all day. It was all worth it, I will just never forget those three weeks.

Four months to go

Officially I have less than four months to go until the end of the funding for my Doctorate.

I am therefore entering a combination phase, where I will be writing and finishing off some parts of my research. Thus I need to get in a writing mood, and hence why I've decided to make a re-appearance on this blog!

A lot of things have changed since my last couple of posts, I haven't decided yet if I want to go back and fill in the blanks, or focus on the current day and time, but I will make it up as I go along.

Blogging has helped me in the past to write down my ideas, and I am hoping that it will help me get in a writing mood again, even if that is in the form of a 'productive' procrastination.

I have to admit that I feel more like an engineer than like a scientist lately, and I am hoping to explore this change through this page.

If you are reading this, please encourage further posts by asking any questions :)

Secret Santa

I know I owe you a post about my olympics experience, I am working on it..!

In the meantime, I've decided to take part in a blogger Secret Santa game.

I've chosen a few different small gifts for this blogger, and I think every one will bring you closer to his/her identity.

Let me start my present giving with the gift of knowledge; using my previous experience with water simulations, I want to introduce you dear blogger to the concept of wetting!  Wetting in general terms, is the way the water droplets behave according to the relationship they have with the material they are resting on. Water is 'happy' to stay longer on water absorbent surfaces, but it will run off quicker from water repellent surfaces.

I wont try to explain the science of bonds, there are better scientists-bloggers out there to explain it all; you can click here for more information. I am not sure if prasinada has explained this in one of her previous science for all posts as well.

Now I have not done an excessive search, but I think these will be prove to be the most helpful apps for you my dear blogger in your new career. Hopefully they will get you off the ground with sketching, and you wont need to get your hands dirty with pencils and sketching boards!

My next gift is 2 for 1. I have specifically chosen this map for you, which shows the real location of all underground stations, and not their 'printed' location. This will help you when walking around london, as you will be able to judge whether stations are actually in walking distance or not. Combined together with this treasure huntthey will help you find your lost love for London. I've been on this treasure hunt myself, and I have to tell you that it's worth the £15. I've seen/noticed things in London I didn't even know existed!

My last, but not least present to you dear, is this:

Hopefully you can explain it's use to the rest of my readers. It took me some time to find a vintage version; this one was actually sold about a year ago, otherwise I would have bought it!

I hope you have a lovely time in Cyprus,
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and your loved ones :)

How many times can you hit rock bottom in a year?

I am trying to avoid a count of all the times I felt pretty lousy in the past year and move on with my first post in almost a year.

Yes I have been down lately and that's why I have not been writing. I am trying to climb upwards though, so hopefully, you will be hearing from me soon..!

I am planning some posts around my Olympics Games Maker experience, and my involvement in a new professional group, called the CIBSE Young Energy Performance Group (YEPG).

My -possibly cheeky- plan

No this is not another pathetic post :)

As I (hope I) mentioned sometime around Christmas, I was feeling quite unsure about the direction of my project. As a foreigner in the UK, there were times that I was doubting my English communication skills. I still am to tell you the truth, as I am not sure if it is my understanding that's 'faulty' or if my project aim and objectives can have various definitions.

I have the feeling that each one of my four supervisors has a different impression, and a different image in his head (yes they are all male) about the final product of my research. I probably have a fifth view on how things will look like 2.5 years from now!

So I have decided to take action!
I an planning to use all the 'core skills & tools' that my company is offering me, to restructure my project.
There is a document called the 'project brief' and as its name suggests, it is a brief document describing a project. It comprises of sub-sections such as the description of the project, 'problem statements', as well as goal statements; that talk more specifically about what problem the project is going to solve, and what the outcomes will be. It can be as specific as you want, including % savings, and what areas are in and out of scope.

I have filled in one of these project briefs before, about one of my shorter projects, but I have decided to complete one for the whole of my project.
This proved to be quite challenging, as I do not feel that my aim and objectives are specific enough, therefore I came up with a plan!

Next week I have a meeting with all my supervisors in one room. I do not want them to start arguing about what I should and should not be doing, it is MY project anyway! Rather than me deciding what I want to do and just presenting it to them, my plan is to guide them to first of all express their opinion, but ultimately agreeing on my version. It is not cheeky, I am no Derren Brown, but I think it will work!

So what have I done? I have created a list of matching problem & goal statements that are relevant to my project. Some of which are the ideas of my academic supervisors on what I should be working on. Some are what my company wants me to work on. Some are very relevant, and very rewarding, some are irrelevant, and are there to create discussion. Of course the list includes the ones I want to work on.

The list was sent to all my supervisors, with an extra column on the right hand side for them to rag the statements in a priority order (1-10). What I am expecting? I am expecting to see 1s and 10s for the same statements from different people. I am expecting to see 5s next to statements that are not really beneficial, and further down the line, and I hope that I see some 2s and 3s next to the ones that are most interesting to me! They should be sending their lists to me, before the meeting..

Lets see how it goes next week!!

Secret Santa - Revisited

A fellow blogger organised a secret santa game between some of the cypriot and greek bloggers. It was an excellent idea, congrats prasinada!

Being so unorganised, I forgot to send an email, and therefore didn't take part in the game, but I read most of their present-posts anyway! I have to admit I felt a bit lonely reading all their posts and presents they thought/created/made for each other.

But as Invictus says, "Worry not myfriend"
Santa thought about me as well. Even if my mum didn't find the laptop bag I wanted, and my boyfriend was broke, santa still gave me a present :)

and it arrived right one time (English Santa you see)

I have finally received my acceptance email for the Olympic Games :D

I am officially a games maker for London 2012!

That's all for now..
I ll try to be back soon with some more news and goals for the new year! (one of which is to write here more often ;) )

The emotional cycle of change

You are right... this does exist, and when you get as low as you possibly thought you could, it's about time to realise it and do something about it..

So I took the first step and realised I ve hit bottom (of the current state)
I've been through anxiety, denial, fear, despair, panic, discouragement, but I think I am ready to move to the other side.

Hopefully you will see from the diagram I found (even though it is about investing- it is very relevant) that I am meant to be on an upward curve!

It is now 3 days before Christmas, today was my last day in the office before the end of the year, and thankfully I have 'ended' the year on a high note..

I am finally hopeful for the future, I ve brainstormed, and I have started forming ideas for the year ahead. I have even formed a hypothesis and started collecting some data.

It is about time I acknowledge what I have achieved in the past year, where I was a year and a half ago, and where I am currently. What potential and future plans I am now able to have, and quite importantly, how lucky I am with the financial stability I have right now.

Sometimes it is important to sit down and do some self criticising. It might be a bit time consuming, but re-alighning your goals and objectives according to your current needs can prove quite important. It can give you a better understanding of yourself, and clearer directions as to what actions you need to take in order to achieve those goals.

I am actually quite happy that I ve hit my bottom before Christmas! I now have my holidays to think about it, and come fresh in January with more ideas in order to plan for the year ahead.

It's not Christmas yet

and I am feeling a bit empty...

I am unsure about some parts of my project.. the AIM..
and my 4 (yes FOUR) supervisors all want different things from me and my project,
and my confidence levels are decreasing, FAST...

On the one hand, I want this year to finish so I can start the new one..
one the other hand, I dont! I want this year to last longer so that the end of my research is not that close (ok I do have 2.5 more years but that's not enough...). I feel lost..

I know I am going through a cycle, I have read all those books that say that PhDs are emotional cycles, and that year 1 and a half is the lowest point, where you start feeling that you haven't achieved anything in the first year and the end is so close.. and that's EXACTLY how I fell..

I suppose I need someone to reassure me that I am on the right track, and that I will achieve something before the end of these 4 years.. but right now it just feels like the company is moving too fast compared to me, and that I will never be able to catch up, and actually move faster than them so as to 'create' something unique, and 'offer something to knowledge' so that I pass my degree.

Oh and I am sorry, this was not meant to be such a dreadful post..

I'm so excited!

I'm so excited about tonight! I'm going to an informal dinner with very important people in my industry!!

I've not had a great start to my day, I paid almost twice what I usually pay to get to work before 8, and I didnt even make it! Then due to a misunderstanding I was left with no means of transport to get to a meeting I had at 10am! So I was left in the office with all the cakes from the cake sale! Ok that wasn't bad ;) but then on my way back to London, I forgot to touch in my oyster card so I was charged another £6.50!!

I'm currently waiting for the group of people I'm supposed to be meeting at 7.30! Oh I hope they are a chattable bunch, otherwise I will feel awfully shy amongst them!

I ve taken a picture of the ridiculous place they asked me to sit, but mobile blogger wont let me upload it, I'll do so later on :)

***Ok I need to update you on this post.. It's 7.24pm, I've been here for the past 30minutes, and you know what?? The reservation is for 8pm!! another half hour waiting time!

It's our bake-a-cake day tomorrow

Tomorrow everyone in the office will be baking cakes and muffins and brownies and then sell them for charity, so I thought I would make them something different!

It had been a while since the last time I made 'troufes' and 'amigdalota' probably since I was in elementary school, but I thought, what the heck, I will make them some!

So here they are:

I will let you know if my coworkers like them!

Monday, 18 July 2011

It was Friday

last friday, the day after my friends' graduation. It was the Friday of my London Olympic games interview.

The day started pretty normal, if you exclude that I was unable to have a shower the night before and I had to wake up earlier. I had my breakfast and was getting ready to get into the shower when it got me.
My bowel problem I ve had for the past 6 years, which was much better during the past 2 months. As you could probably tell, my day's start was delayed by about half an hour. I was meant to be getting the train at 9.07, but I was just entering the shower then.

Anyway, I don't want to overcomplicate things, you get the idea. I started for my interview 20 minutes late, instead of 30 minutes early. On the train I realised that I could not access the map of the area on my smartphone as I did not have the newest acrobat viewer installed.

Great, I was late, without a map, but at least with a vague idea as to where I was heading to.

Without the map, but with a few lucky guesses, I find the venue.
Thank god the organisers were not so fussy about the time, they did ask us not to arrive early, so I arrived there with a smile, and said that I had an appointment for 11.00 (it was already 11.15). They gave my a blue wristband and asked me to continue walking towards the interview area, through a welcome area, where people take your picture, verify your identity, and introduce you to the magic of Olympic games.

At 11.45 I have my interview. My interviewer was very welcoming and reassuring, she made sure I was not stressed before starting the interview, even offering me a glass of water.
She did ask me a few 'interview like' questions, asking for examples of my team working abilities and so on, but she also asked me why I wanted to be involved in the Olympic Games.

I left the interview feeling very positive, with my hopes up.
I do keep my fingers crossed for that one.

On my way back from the venue I saw that I had received about 10 new emails, most of them advertisements, but one was from a sender I did not recognise.

Opening the email, I realised it was from the conference committee I had sent my paper to.
It went through the second stage!!

The two reviewers sent me comments, recommendations and compulsory changes for the paper, but they both agreed that my paper will be accepted if the key issues are addressed on time.

WIN!

And that's how my day changed all of a sudden in a matter of a few hours!

and now, 'heads in' - "Τα κεφάλια μέσα"

for another two weeks or so, I will be unable to take a day off.
I have to complete the changes, make a poster AND write my end of year report in order to go through the year.. FUN!

Well.. isn't that why I chose to start an EngD?

Aiming for 10.000

That's 10 000 words, unfortunately and not pounds (or Euros/Dollars).

I have devoted this weekend to finishing my personal development report, I started working on this report back in April, writing 1-2 thousand words, but I need to complete it now, as the deadline is on Friday.

The official deadline is on Friday, but I need to complete it by Tuesday at least! I was originally aiming to finish this today but it doesn't look like it. It's a stupid report, but it is worth 15 credits out of the 45 I am taking this year, therefore I need to complete it!

The good thing about it, is that it involves writing about all the courses I have taken part-in in the past 6 months, and the self-study I have done in order to become who I am today. It has been a good experience, I have to admit, attending various courses such as the presentation course back in April that got me so stressed and gave me a cold sore!

Writing a report about all these courses is not a happy experience, even though it does act as a reminder for the courses!

Ohhh ok ok, I like writing the report, but it is so f****ing long that it makes itself an-enjoyable!
One of my biggest problems is that when I came up with my development plan, I didn't really take into consideration the various courses I should be attending. So I ended up attending two courses that were for the same skill, and not attending any courses for some other skills.

But. But. It will be a good report. I am halfway through it, yes, but I have created a strong structure, which helps me write more fluently. I have also used a cool colour scheme and set up the different headings, therefore I wont have to do much work after I finish writing (and proof reading).

I just hope my manager and supervisors wont want to read it, as some of it is very.. vague and.. well.. very obvious!?

A year or two ago, I would never even dream to be able to write 10000 in 4-5 days.. now it just seems 'natural'. Has the blog really improved my writing skills? I know I don't write very often, but I believe that it has helped me!

I am just sorry that what I write is pretty boring usually! I still haven't gotten used to this blogging/writing thing..

I hope those of you in Cyprus enjoy your day off today (it's already Monday in Cyprus)
For the ones in the UK, it's back to the office tomorrow (and it's probably raining as well)!

On a lighter note

I did complete 2 weeks away (apart from yoghurt last week) from lactose.

I was told that I need to stay completely off for two weeks, before I start the testing, therefore I will continue without it!

The good news is that apart from that one day, I had no other major issues with my stomach! I have even lost a 1kg!
And that 1kg is excellent news for me! In the past I have not been able to lose weight. Even being on diets (from actual dietitians) did not really work, it would take me a whole month to loose 2kg and that was even debatable some months. And of course I gained all of it back as soon as I stopped.

I am quite excited right now! I want to get myself on a running schedule as well; I ve been reading a book about a person, very similar to me, who decides to get fit for a marathon, in order to raise money for a friend.
Let's see if I can make it.. Right now I am not sure if I can run for more than 5 minutes without fainting!

Oh I am so optimistic after each deadline.. I hope this continues through to my other deadlines this month!

Another milestone

I have finally submitted my 'draft' paper for the CIBSE Technical Symbosium in September!

Of course it did take me the whole of last month to find the data, analyse it, and write the paper as a whole. Something I learned from 'core skills training' within my company is to review the performance during each project as soon as it finishes.
Therefore:
I will have to give it to me, I have been more organised than usual. I even managed to send my draft for review to my supervisors on Wednesday!
But even though I had a draft by last Wednesday, I stayed up all night last night to finish it. There are various reasons for that. Firstly I did not finalize my graphs over the weekend as I was supposed to, and I did not write the conclusion early enough. Also I hadn't checked the required formatting for the references thoroughly, and I was using the wrong one from the beginning.
These, on top with the fact that one of my supervisors only sent me his comments through at 2 o clock yesterday, requesting major changes in the results section, caused major trouble!

As a general conclusion I think that I have improved.
But I need to organise myself a lot better in order to manage my project more effectively.
For example I could have sent my draft earlier to my supervisors so that they could find the time to review it, in between their busy schedules.
While waiting for their responses I could have finalized my version of it, with good quality graphs and a template for the whole paper. This would have helped me save time when making the requested changes.
One of the reasons why my version was not finalized, was mainly because of my stress, keeping me from working effectively. Last week I spent 4 days at home, supposedly writing, but I was not really making any progress. I really need to find a way to avoid this happening in the future!

How I will follow this up? I will try to work in tighter schedules, so that for the next deadline, I do send my draft to my supervisors at least a week before the deadline. This will help all of us in creating a better result, and hopefully keep my stress levels under control!

Have a great week!
